Detox your beauty cabinet: eco-stylist and green designer Danny Seo shows you how to make over your beauty cabinet, using easy-to-source vintage finds

Natural Health, Nov, 2009 by Olessa Pindak

YOU OPEN YOUR BEAUTY CABINET and look at the contents twice every single day, but if you’re like most people, what’s behind Closed doors often isn’t pretty. Old, expired skincare is common in every beauty cabinet and hair ties, bobby pins, cotton balls all start to pile up on one another, making not only an unsightly, but also bacteriaridden space. At Natural Health we worked with eco beauty expert Danny Seo, who taught us how to overhaul our beauty cabinet to the essentials-and gave us some great tips for keeping things organized along the way.

Vintage glass rabbit dish with maxim organic cotton balls

We all have these funny things that get passed down from generation to generation. This was probably once used as a special Easter decoration, but instead of keeping it hidden in the back of a china cabinet, try using it to store organic cotton balls. ($2.50; maximhy.com)

Vintage glass florist frog with ecotools makeup brushes & Aveda makeup brushes:

These florist frogs were originally used to hold flower stems in place for flower arranging. Found for about three dollars at flea markets, they’re perfect for storing eco-chic makeup brushes. ($8-12; target.com and $12-34; aveda.com)

Vintage glass tea cup

Tea cups with chips can no longer be used to drink out of, but are perfect for storing anything small like cosmetic rounds or bobby pins. This one is nice because it’s clear so you can see exactly what’s inside.

Pangea organics Eye Cream

I This all-natural blend of rare Turkish rose and white tea work to nourish and repair the idelicate skin around the eyes. Super concentrated, a little bit goes a long way. ($55; pangea organics.com)

Acca Kappa beechwood comb in a recycled glass jelly jar

This natural wood comb is great for working out tangles and the jar is the simplest thing to find at home. If you don’t have one around, the next time you finish up your jelly, place the jar into a pot of boiling water and voila–a new container

Love hurts? No it doesn't

Love hurts? No it doesn’t

0 Comments | Daily Mirror, The; London (UK), Nov 21, 2009 | by MIRROR REPORTER

SCIENTISTS have found love really can conquer all after a bizarre study showed our emotions can block out pain.

Tests on 25 women at the University of California found they experienced less pain when they looked their partners’ pictures than if they looked at snaps of a stranger or an empty chair.

And this is only the latest way in which love has been shown to be good for you. Here are 10 reasons why love is the best medicine.

ROMANCE boosts your immune system, lowering your chances of getting illnesses from the common cold upwards.

Stress hormones are kept at bay while levels of feel-good hormones increase, leaving you better prepared to fight infections.

It even reduces your likelihood of dying from conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

A study in San Francisco found an active love life encouraged the release of cells in the body which fight infection.

RESEARCH by scientists in Seattle showed married couples were likely to live longer than single people because of the benefits on mental health.

You’re less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, stress and phobias and you’re also less likely to have an accident.

SURVEYS show singles are twice as likely to be miserable as those in love.

Just 13% of married people say their life is stressful, jumping to 25% for singletons.

One 20-year study also found that marriage actually leads to changes in the male brain which makes men feel happier.

Being part of a couple also means you have someone to share problems with, which can be good for stress.

And with studies showing stress is linked to a host of illnesses such as depression, rashes and anxiety, being able to minimise it is no bad thing.

BEING in love can benefit men and women’s health differently. Women are less likely to get breast cancer in a relationship because they are more likely to have children, which has protective effects.

For men, relationships are considered as important a factor as diet, exercise and not smoking. For example, men who get divorced have twice the rate of lung cancer as men who are married.

Having their other halves look out for their health also helps.

FALLING in love is a good way to drink less. Government stats show couples don’t drink as much.

Single people have more time and money on their hands.

Twice as many single women as married ones drink more than six units of alcohol a day, risking liver and kidney damage at the very least.

Research from Harvard School of Public Health also showed that losing a partner is the biggest reason for men drinking heavily.

RESEARCH in Sweden found that people in love are less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease. Married middleaged people are half as likely to get the form of dementia as single folk. Divorce or becoming widowed raises the risk three-fold. Scientists say remaining socially active may be one of the reasons why.

A STUDY in Canada found those with borderline high blood pressure who were in love and spent lots of time with their partner were less likely to suffer a heart attack.

VantageScore Solutions Scores Complete Legal Victory over FICO

Business Wire, Nov 20, 2009

STAMFORD, Conn. — A federal jury verdict in Minneapolis confirms a complete victory for
VantageScore Solutions in all claims made by FICO. In its decision
against FICO today, the jury affirms VantageScores ability to use its
501-990 credit score range. The verdict, which finds that the
VantageScore numeric range does not constitute trademark infringement,
follows the dismissal of multiple related claims by FICO earlier this
year and fundamentally protects consumer and lender choice in the credit
scoring marketplace.

This is a clear victory for VantageScore and others in the credit
scoring industry, including lenders, said Barrett Burns, VantageScore
Solutions President and Chief Executive Officer. More important, this
decision is a victory for consumers, who will continue to benefit from
choice and competition in the credit scoring marketplace.

Cameras burnt ‘in revenge for speeding fines’

0 Comments | Daily Mail (London, England), The, August 18, 2009

SPEED cameras are being destroyed in what appears to be a revenge campaign by motorists.

Two on one stretch of road in East Dorset were set alight on consecutive weekends, and four others have been vandalised in the county in the past year.

The area is being patrolled by teams of traffic officers in marked and unmarked cars and on motorbikes in a crackdown on motorists who are speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile at the wheel or driving without insurance.

Over three days last week the teams issued fines of up to [pounds sterling]200 to 151 drivers.

Dorset Safety Camera Partnership, which runs 38 fixed cameras, said it was not yet clear how the cameras had been torched. Police said they are investigating the arsons.

Motorists have been known to go to extreme lengths to vent their fury at speed cameras In 2007, around 200 were wrecked across Britain, running up a [pounds sterling]500,000 repair bill.

The cameras had been set alight, axed, sawn, stoned, superglued, shot at, sprayed with paint, shoved over – and ringed with a flaming tyre.
